The Blacksmith and The Prince
written for [livejournal.com profile] au_bingo, prompt: middle ages
fandom: cardcaptor sakura; pairing: Touya Kinomoto/ Yukito Tsukishiro; rating: PG; approximately 900 words

Disclaimer: This is only fiction and written for non-profitable purpose. Cardcaptor Sakura and its characters are owned by Clamp.

A/N: Not beta'ed, of course. This AU story is based on/ inspired by the movie-made-for-TV 'Ring of the Nibelungs' (other titles carried were Curse of the Ring, Dark Kingdom: The Dragon King, Sword of Xanten), specifically scenes involving the characters played by Robert Pattinson (Giselher) and Benno Fürmann (Eric/ Siegfried). I changed the character's relations from canon so the story would work.

The eagle soared through the air with its wings outstretched. Yukito watched it grow smaller as it flew farther and farther away.

"Do you think it will come back?" Ruby asked, hand splayed above her eyes in a futile attempt to shield the bright glow of the sun.

"Of course he will," Yukito said with feigned confidence, masking the uncertainty swelling inside him. "He knows I'm his master."

Ruby's lips thinned. "Well, master of the bird, call him back then."

There was a commotion on the ground and Yukito watched two men hop off a wagon. The older one was greeted by several commoners. The younger one had his eyes set on the sky.

The eagle swooped down, landing directly on the younger man's outstretched arm. Yukito made his way down the stairs. "That bird is mine," he said.

"So he is," the man said. "What's his name?"

"Tsubasa." Yukito ceased his strides when the man met his eyes.

"He's beautiful." The man's gaze was warm, melting the cold sheet of ice wrapped around Yukito's heart.

The feeling was strange, foreign to Yukito that it scared him. He tried to sound boorish when he said, "Well, give him back then," hoping to hide the sudden interest he felt stirring inside him.

"I will if you will give me your name."

Yukito searched the man's face for any hint of mockery but found none. If the man simply wanted to know his name, then why put up a fight? "Prince Yukito. Nephew to the King."

"Well, Prince Yukito," the man gently eased the eagle onto Yukito's arm. "I am Touya, blacksmith at your service."

Yukito felt his heart skipped when the man – Touya – winked at him.

Touya was holding a steel bar over a fire when he heard Yukito call out from the stairs. "Blacksmith. May I enter?"

"You may," Touya said. "And please call me by my name." The strange knot Touya often felt whenever Yukito was around tightened.

Yukito stood next to him, eyes trained on the fire. "I am here to thank your father for the sword he presented to me earlier. I failed to do so in my excitement."

"He just left to fetch some more iron. I shall give him the message when he returns."

The glow of the flames danced on the surface of Yukito's eyes. "It must feel good to be able to forge something with your own hands," he said, fingers gliding along the sword lying on the table nearby.

"Do you have any craft or hobbies?" Touya asked, curiosity burning inside him.

"My uncle forbade me to work." Yukito's gaze shifted back to the fire. "He says it would taint his reputation if his own nephew labored like a slave."

"Is that what you think?"

"No. But I must do as the king says."

"Don't you get bored?" Touya couldn't imagine not doing anything that involved hard work.

"All the time." Yukito blew a lock of hair away from his face. "If it wasn't for my cousin, Ruby, I would probably die of boredom."

"Your cousin looks pretty, doesn't she?" Touya had met Ruby once but that was enough to notice how annoyingly flirtatious she could be.

"Yes." Yukito laughed – soft and fleeting – like he recalled something funny. "Noblemen in the kingdom want her but none of them could claim her affection."

"Who does she want then?" Touya didn't really want to know. But it seemed the only way to keep Yukito talking.

"I don't know. Why do you ask? Do you fancy her?"

"No." Gods, no. If only Touya could tell Yukito. But what would a prince want with a blacksmith? "My heart belongs to someone else."

When Touya asked if he would like to go hunting, Yukito was overwhelmed with enthusiasm. "Yes, he said. "Yes, I would love to."

"Would the king allow you?" Touya asked.

"I would ask," Yukito lied. He wouldn't dare mention it to his uncle because he knew he would only hear words that would hurt his ears. "But I'm sure he wouldn't mind. He trusts you."

They set out very early the next morning, hours before dawn. Yukito only told Ruby, knowing his cousin wouldn't tell the King unless it was necessary.

Yukito had never been to the woods, not for a very long time. His father used to take him hunting but he died in battle when Yukito was young. His mother passed away soon after, leaving Yukito under his uncle's care. He'd been kept within the safety of the village since then.

It felt good to be free, running between trees, feeling the wind sweeping through his hair. What made all this even better was having Touya at his side.

The sun hid behind the mountains earlier than usual. Touya set out camp near the river. They both set their gaze on the sky, naming as many constellations they could find.

"You see that one there?" Touya's finger traced on the shape that Yukito pretended to see. "The one shaped like two men, one of them holding a sword. That's called the Blacksmith and the Prince. It is said that they are destined to be together that even the gods couldn't tear them apart."

Yukito didn't know how true the story was, but he held it in his heart, giving him hope that maybe someday, he and Touya would find out if they too, were destined to be together.
