The paper crumples between his fingers, fonts start to blur and Rin has to blink twice, thrice even to make sure that he's not imagining things. Then he reads the letter once more. For the fifth time now.
"I don't see why you're upset," Sousuke says, tone tipping on the mocking side. "This is what you've always dreamed of, right?"
As always, Sousuke serves as his voice of reason. Rin has worked hard to get to Nationals so he could be scouted, mind set on a single goal. Now the chance to fulfill his dream is served on a silver platter. Why then does it feel like something is missing, that something isn't right?
"Yeah," is all Rin says, aware that his inflection lacks enthusiasm that Sousuke probably expects to hear.
"Something's holding you back, though." It's more of a clear-cut statement than a hypothesis and Sousuke studies him as if waiting for Rin to crumble and fall apart. "It's him, isn't it?"
There's no need to elaborate. Between him and his childhood best friend, they both know who Sousuke means and Rin simply nods, eyes sliding back to the letter still clutched in his hand, then braces himself for the onslaught of lecture when he hears Sousuke sighs.
"I know you claim that he isn't the reason why you decided to throw your dream away back in middle school, but..." The pause leaves a thick, uncomfortable tension in the air and the weight of Sousuke's stare grows heavier by the second. "Seriously, Rin. Are you going to let him be the reason for you to do exactly the same thing this time?"
It doesn't sound like Sousuke's placing blame on Haru or anything, more like he's trying to point out how unfair it will be for Haru to be used as an anchor that prevents Rin from sailing toward his goal. But.
"I need him." Rin steels himself, tries not to cower as the truth spills from his mouth. "I can't explain why, but I feel incomplete without him. I need him. By my side. Always." He's aware how weak he sounds, but he doesn't care.
Sousuke's gaze hardens, green eyes sharp like daggers that makes Rin flinch a little. Then the whole stern façade melts and Sousuke looks away, says, "Then do what you think is right. For the both of you," then starts to move away.
"Wait," Rin calls out, suddenly unsure as if he has just been caught in a whirlpool of indecisions. "What do I do?"
Sousuke just snorts, doesn't look back. "You're the one who always comes up with spontaneous ideas," is all he says before he saunters out of the locker room.
It takes a week before Rin finally finds the courage to show Haru the letter and Haru, stoic face and all, says, "Congratulations, Rin. You're close to making your dream come true."
And Rin just grabs hold of Haru's wrist, pulls him closer then blurts out, "Come with me."
