Why are most of my OTPs apart this Christmas? *sighs*

Summary: Cook comes across a shop with a Christmas tree on display and it reminds of Archie.
A/N:
- The title comes from the lyrics of 'Little Christmas Tree'
It's been what… nine months now since Archie left, not that he's really counting because he knows it isn't healthy. Counting the days and weeks and months since Archie has started with his mission only reminds him how much he misses Archie.
The decision wasn't an easy one for both of them, but it's what Archie wanted back then and Cook could only respect his wishes. It's important to Archie so it's important to him but it isn't as easy as it sounds now, is it?
Cook's back in New York for a series of meetings. This city holds so many memories of Archie, is home to the littlest things that remind him of his boyfriend. Or is it ex-boyfriend? He's not sure anymore.
Archie has chosen to walk a path where Cook isn't welcome. Whether that path will curve back to meet with Cook's own, he can't tell.
"It's only for two years," he told Archie before he left. "Before we know it, two years is gone and you'll be back with me in no time."
The look Archie had given him was unsettling and it still haunts Cook in his dream. He wanders to the place where he and Archie went shopping Christmas last year (or was it two years ago?) and finds the same little Christmas tree sitting on the shop window.
"Oh gosh, look Cook, it's so pretty! That will look awesome in your home," Archie had said when they saw it the first time. Cook never really thought of buying it, not wanting to carry the damn thing all the way back to Los Angeles. So they just took a picture of it instead. Seems like it was just yesterday.
One year and three more months, Arch, he thinks with one last look at the Christmas tree before letting his feet drag him away.
The walk back to the hotel is harder now that he's even more aware how alone he is and he knows tonight he'll do nothing but stare out the window and watch the snowflakes fall, knows he'll only fall into melancholy because he won't be getting anything from Archie this Christmas – no presents, no hugs or kisses, not even a simple message – but he can hope, right?

Title: Christmas Won't Be The Same This Year

Summary: Christmas brings a lot of memories for Archie.
A/N:
- The title comes from the Jackson 5 song, 'Christmas Won't Be The Same This Year'
The warm December wind blows past him, carrying with it the distant sound of children singing. The lack of chill is ironic, Archie thinks, since he's not used to this kind of weather at this time of the year. Then memories of past Christmases wash over him and Archie finds himself dwelling over the things he misses back home.
Cook manages to worm his way into his thoughts and Archie can't ignore the sting it brings. The past nine months have paved way for a new life he knows will be waiting for him when he returns home and Archie still doesn't know if he has a space for Cook in it.
They had a life. They had a good life. But Archie felt – probably still does – something was missing. That was why he had decided to go on a mission, hoping to find the answers to fill in the blanks, so to speak.
It's not the first Christmas he'll be away from home. He'd been on the road during this season ever since he got off Idol. But it doesn't make him any less homesick.
With the thought of sending a message to his family, he rushes back to the mission house where the missionaries are allowed to use the computers to send emails to families this Christmas. He's glad that the rules aren't too strict at this age.
As expected, the small computer room at the mission house is full of missionaries – some may have traveled from the nearby towns of Chile just to take advantage of this rare opportunity. It takes half an hour worth of wait but when Archie finally settles in front of a console, he quickly signs into his email account, fingers skipping across keys.
The message is supposed to be short and straightforward, but it's Archie's nature to ramble so he ends up relaying detailed accounts of his mission since he last got in touch with his family.
"Only five minutes, Elder Archuleta," one of the leaders in the mission house reminds him, prompting him to check the time left and sees he's got less than a couple of minutes.
Archie adds small, nonsensical things before finally sending the message. With a minute left, he contemplates sending one other message so he opens a blank page and starts typing Cook's email address. But then when he gets to the message box, Archie realizes he has no idea what to say. Maybe a simple 'Merry Christmas' and perhaps add a 'Belated Happy Birthday' would suffice? He knows there are so many things he'd like to tell Cook but he's at a loss for word.
Not realizing that his allotted time is almost up, Archie just sits there, staring at the screen until someone calls his attention so he has no choice but to discard the message draft and sign out of his account. Maybe next year, he thinks and practically drags his feet back to his small apartment.
